Tatting can be done either from a diagram or with written instructions. I had never learned to tat from a diagram so when I saw a pattern I wanted to do, I searched for how to read a diagram. A very friendly tatter saw my post on another tatter's blog and told me to buy the book " Tatting With Visual Patterns" by Mary Konior. I did and this is the result of my first piece of tatting done from a diagram.
I don't like the way the heart starts and finishes so I may change that the next time I make one. The only problem I had with the pattern was that I needed to switch shuttles on some of the chains, but the pattern didn't say anything about switching shuttles. I learned this after winding my shuttle and starting the heart, but managed to attach another shuttle and go on my merry way.

Nice heart! Good for you for learning how to tat from the picture or diagram! :)
That's the book I got when I wanted to learn how to tat from a diagram and it has become one of my very favorites. That heart is too, but it IS a bit tricky to follow.
I like how this turned out. I'm willing to keep it at my house if you don't want it Mom.
Your tatting is beautiful!
