Finished this Bargello quilt today. It is the second one I made using these colors. The first one was too long and skinny so I made this one a bit fatter by using slightly wider strips.

This is the first one, but I haven't quilted it yet...only slightly different and narrower...

Well, maybe :) I have been sewing more and on silly Facebook a lot less so that is a good thing.

Twice a year my friend, Barbara, does a sew-in at Del Norte Baptist Church in Albuquerque. I didn't get to go this time because I went to Baltimore to see my son and his wonderful family, but got a kit and this is the quilt top I just finished.

Oh how I have been lazy! Not blogging, not quilting, not doing much of anything, but then everyone needs a break now and then.

My Tuesday group all made this beautiful tote bag. It is nice and large for travelling with many pockets inside and out.

Kool Kaleidoscope #2

I wanted to teach this class at the quilt shop, made my sample, had the shop order the DVD (as required by Ricky Tims) and no one... no one has taken my class.

So I was having so much fun making the first quilt, I made another.

The students are really missing out on this one :(

Quilt Retreat

Over the weekend of September 10th to the 13th, I went on a quilt retreat. It's calles S'mores and is at the Hummingbird Music Camp in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico and is run by two of my friends, Phoebe and Cindy. The teacher for the weekend was J. Michelle Watts and originally I did not plan to do the project, but being the overachiever that I am, I did bring fabric... just in case.

I did the project...

I also made a couple of quilted wallets, a fabric basket, and some paper pieced quilt squares for a calendar project.

Been AWOL

I just realized I haven't posted for over a month. I have to blame it on Facebook and those darn computer games/applications on there. I have been on the computer and not quilting, which is unusual for me. I do have new things to post and hope to do it tomorrow and thank my fellow bloggers for giving me the kick in the pants I need!

I went on a quilt retreat last weekend so I have a quilt top to show you once I put it on the computer and load it on the page.

Stashbusting

I'm giving up on keeping track of what I buy versus what I use. Maybe I'll start that again next year. For now, I will keep on making my quilts and using what I have, but it's just too hard to stop buying fabric! Went to the quilt shop yesterday and bought about 20 yards... but I needed blacks and there were 2 other fabrics at 30% off... so... there you go!

I do have a new kaleidoscope quilt on the design wall... pictures tomorrow!

My husband just called me and there's a big fire to the south of me, about 10 miles. The smoke seems to be blowing east, but will keep an eye on it!

We don't see a lot of different critters around the house. Yes, we have rabbits and squirrels. Sometimes we see a deer, hear the coyotes. A bear has been sighted once or twice in the neighborhood, even bobcats. We're at too high an altitude to see roadrunners, but sometimes we happen to catch sight of one. Where is this leading to, you say? Well, a few weeks ago, as Chuck was getting ready to leave for work, I happened to see a chipmunk on the side of the house. Chuck didn't believe me until he rounded the corner of the house and lo and behold... a chipmunk!

He hung around long enough for me to get a picture. My husband was sure I had never seen a chipmunk before, especially around our house, but I had. My parents have a cabin at Mammonth Lakes, California, and there are tons of chipmunks there!

Received an e-mail last week from Anilee's Treasure Hunt that I was a winner in a random drawing and would receive an appreciation gift from Quilter's Roost. The package arrived today and in it was a Willowberry Basics Fat Quarter Bundle... that's 28 FQ's which is 7 yards I have to add to my stash. Oh GEE! Bummer :(

Judy Laquidara's Big Star Stash Quilt. I opted for pieced border #1 and it took a bit of figuring out with Electric Quilt. I had just enough of the border fabric and that was a challenge! It's very directional and I cut one of the strips wrong and had to piece it, but you'll never see it! I had to figure out how to cut 4 borders with 2 pieced strips to each border and make sure I had enough fabric to do it! Took me most of yesterday afternoon. I'll have to find a different fabric to bind it with... nothing but scraps left :)

Another scrappy quilt! This time in blue. I was thinking about doing it as a class for the quilt shop, but might just do it as a mystery. One week we'll make the components and if they don't finish, they can have them done by the next class, then the quilt will be revealed and they can put the blocks together... hmmm...call it a scrappy mystery :)

Here's the story behind my design wall. We designed our house, but when designing the quilt studio, I had all my storage space mapped out, but didn't even think about a design wall. I'd stick batting up on the wall, but there was never enough room for the quilt or I couldn't stand back far enough. My husband came up with this brilliant idea. We hung a cheap plastic shade over the closet door and pinned batting to it. When I need to get in the closet, it just rolls up! It was the perfect solution to my dilema :)

My Tuesday group came over yesterday and Teresa made me a cake! Such wonderful friends I have :)

This is it for the birthday fabric.

I spent my entire store credit and a little more on this 29 yards of fabric. I'm done... unless I NEED something for a quilt. Now that I have my birthday over with, it's back to stashbusting! I am really happy with my fabric purchases and can't wait to start a new quilt, but first... finishing up some of my UFO's and getting a bunch of my tops quilted.

I turned 58 today and did some stash building. This is the fabric I bought at Busy Bee Quilts in Edgewood. I get a 20% discount for shopping on my birthday, but this fabric was 30% off so I bought 3 yards of each.

Then I went into Albuquerque and went to Quilt Works where I get a 25% discount when I shop on my birthday and had a $100 gift certificate from my son and daughter-in-love. I bought this lovely assortment of fabric which adds up to 26 yards... so much for stash busting, but, after all, it IS my birthday and it only comes once a year.

Since I worked at Busy Bee Quilts while the owners were at Quilt Market, I have a lovely store credit of $240... which I will spend at a later date. Too many other things going on today to be able to spend the time I needed to adequately shop till I dropped :) Received phone calls from Marilyn in Portland, my sister Pat in Sebastapol California, my brother Dan, my daughter Jess, my friend Barbara and my dad.

My purple quilts

I have had a lot of wonderful comments about my purple scrap quilts and the pattern. This is the first one I made:

Then I changed direction and made this quilt for Amy...

The first purple was much too large for a lap quilt and I had tons of 5" squares left over so I made a smaller one...

It is a two block quilt using the 54-40 or fight block and the cups and saucers block. Amy's quilt and the purple lap quilt are variations of the first quilt. It had so many flying geese blocks, which I can't make using my 5" squares so I substituted 4 patches to create a different look.

I bought 6 yards of background fabric for use in my baby quilts... the end of the bolt and didn't know if it could be reordered. It seems a lot of times, fabric manufacturers discontinue fabrics as quickly as they create them so you buy it when you see it because it may not be there next time!

I used 2 yards in the backing and binding of the community service quilt for guild.

And I used 4.75 yards in another purple scrap quilt, lap sized, which has now become my favorite pattern!

This coming week will probably not be productive since I'm working in the quilt shop Wednesday through Saturday while Mike and Cheri go to quilt market. But all the money I make will go to buy fabric for my birthday, which is the 18th!!!!!

S'Mores Quilt Retreat April 2009

I attended the S'Mores Quilt Retreat at the Hummingbird Music Camp in the Jemez Mountains over the weekend. Barbara was the teacher and Jackie Robinson's "Weaver Fever" was the quilt pattern taught. Since I made the quilt many years ago, I chose to work on my daughter's "Wedding Star" quilt and also make a couple of wallhangings. Here is a slideshow of the retreat, starting with Barbara's trunk show and then continuing with all the quilts that were made over the weekend.

We arrived at the retreat on Thursday afternoon and quilted until noon on Sunday. Phoebe and Cindy host two of these retreats per year, one in April and one in September. They are always a lot of fun with new quilters and retreat alumni.

Not a very productive week. I made a bunch of potholders because mine were a disaster and they got tossed in the trash. I also pieced the top for our community service project at guild. I'm not counting the fabric guild gave me for the background... it's in and out at the same time, but I am counting the cool space fabric I used for the quilt.

It is a Quiltathon weekend, but yesterday was spent as a non-quilting, yet very rewarding day with about 65 women from my church. We laughed, sang, prayed, cried and had a wonderful time. There were skits, good food and a tea party! Today I plan on working on making the large flying geese for Judy's current stash busting project. This one is right up my alley since it uses brights!

It's snowing again... doesn't the weather know it's supposed to be spring? There were only flakes falling out of the sky when I got up this morning, but now it's starting to cover the ground. The weatherman said we could get 1-3 inches. Give me a break! I think this is the latest we have ever gotten snow. Is spring ever going to come?

On another note, I have added a list of New Mexico bloggers to my site. I was the first New Mexico blogger to register on Quilting Gallery's blogger listing. It's 32 degrees outside... and snowing!

And I thought it was Spring... silly me! I have a fire going in the pellet stove so I'm toasty and warm. In the few minutes it took me to write this, the landscape has changed and the ground is now covered in white. Tomorrow it will be Spring again...maybe... I'm really not complaining :) Any moisture is greatly appreciated.

Tatted Heart

Tatting can be done either from a diagram or with written instructions. I had never learned to tat from a diagram so when I saw a pattern I wanted to do, I searched for how to read a diagram. A very friendly tatter saw my post on another tatter's blog and told me to buy the book " Tatting With Visual Patterns" by Mary Konior. I did and this is the result of my first piece of tatting done from a diagram.

I don't like the way the heart starts and finishes so I may change that the next time I make one. The only problem I had with the pattern was that I needed to switch shuttles on some of the chains, but the pattern didn't say anything about switching shuttles. I learned this after winding my shuttle and starting the heart, but managed to attach another shuttle and go on my merry way.

I fell off the wagon and bought fabric, but I had a gun to my head... really! Well, maybe not, but it couldn't be helped. I bought 1 1/3 yards of fabric at Joann's because it was perfect for a paper piecing project we're doing at guild in June amd I have enough that I'm going to share it with my friends so it should get used up. I also had a gift certificate to Quilts From the Heart in Albuquerque. When you have one, you have to spend it, right? Cindy and Phoebe, who do the S'Mores Retreats, used a picture of my quilt for their brochure and forgot to ask permission... I would have let them use it anyway, but they are honest and felt bad so they bought me a gift certificate. I purchased 4 yards of fabric and... it just so happened that the quilt shop was having a 30/30 sale... 30% off on the 30th of the month so I ended up paying less that $2.00 for my fabric. What a deal! So I am in the red for the week, but still very much in the black for the year.

The batting and binding are coming out of my stash.

St. James Tea Room

KOB TV station in Albuquerque has this promotion they do on Thursdays'...half price on something... and several months ago they did one for the St. James Tea Room. My daughter, her friend, Beth, Teresa and I all waited until 11 am to grab up this fantastic offer. They went so fast and my computer was so slow, I didn't make it, but my daughter graciously let me buy hers. Yesterday, Teresa and I took Teresa's Mom, Charlotte, and our friend Lee to tea at the Tea Room. It was lovely and we had a fabulous time. These are the delicious goodies we feasted upon:

Tatted Earrings

This is the second pair of earrings I made. The first ones have already been given away and I didn't take a picture...they were too long for me. I figured out how to load seed beads on regular crochet thread using a needle threader... it worked! Learned a lot from the first pair.

The first pair I used beads that were too large and didn't have the beads loaded correctly on the threads so they didn't turn out like I expected, which is OK... Kathryn loves them! Here is a link to the pattern I used. I didn't follow it exactly, but it is very similar. Snowflake Earring I have all my new tatting blogger friends to thanks for this. They have inspired me to take up my shuttles and tat again.

March Quiltathon

Chuck was up at 5 this morning with an upset stomach and stayed home from work so I didn't get as much done as I hoped, but I did finish 2 quilts and a couple of small projects. I had made more 16 patch blocks with the leftover strips from the baby quilt last week. I got one top put together with another 20 blocks left for another quilt.

I finished the binding on the Rail Fence Quilt and the Baby Quilt and that will add to my Stash Busting :)

When Eileen came over last week, she had the pattern for this legal pad cover so I borrowed it and made one.

I have needed a pincushion/trash bag for the long arm for some time. The one I had wouldn't stay on the poles when I was pinning or unpinning. I think this one will stay, I made it so the pincushion drapes over the poles instead of balancing on it.

Pignoli Cookies

I think these cookies are my favorite, even better than chocolate chip. We discovered these cookies in a little bakery right next door to our favorite Italian meat market, Tully's in Albuquerque. To buy them is very expensive! They are $16.00 a pound! That's like $2.00 per cookie. My husband loves these cookies so he found the recipe and I have been making them ever since and they are so easy! You should be able to find the almond paste in cans in any grocery store. Here's the recipe: Pignoli Cookies and here are my cookies:

The only thing I do differently from the recipe is to roll them in almonds instead of pine nuts... we like them better that way. Mmmmm delicious. They make two dozen cookies, but I can never get that many, usually around 20 or so.

More snow info

I didn't venture too far off the front porch to get this measurement so I think we have a little more snow than 7 1/2 inches. The wind has started to blow the snow around and it is still snowing. Predictions are that we may get another 2-4 inches. The temperature when we got up was 16... it has warmed to 23. Chuck plowed the driveway with his tractor so we can get out if we want to. If he doesn't plow and we drive on it, it takes much longer for everything to melt. The gate was frozen shut, but that is working now. It is not unusual for us to get snow thin late in the month and all moisture is greatly appreciated. Now the spring wildflowers will come up!

Most of the time, when snow is forecasted, we don't know how much, if any, we will get. 3-6 inches was forecasted for last night and we thought, ok, maybe an inch or two... but we probably have 6-8 inches of the white stuff. Sasha was out cavorting and it was up to her chest! Here is a picture of the back yard. You can see the nice dome the snow has created in the little bird bath.

TIAS Tatting

TIAS means "Tat It And See". Iris Niebach has this tatting design on her blog and she is a very creative tatting artist. I started after seeing what other tatters had done and finally got mine finished the other day. It took me quite a while to do this, especially since I didn't know how to make a SCMR which stands for Self Closing Mock Ring. With the help of tatting bloggers, I was able to figure this out and now my tatting skills aren't so rusty.

I plan on getting a nice frame for this and putting it up in my quilt studio. I love the way it turned out, even though it took me several weeks to complete.

Finally Finished

Yesterday was quilting day at my house, as is all Tuesday's except for the 2nd Tuesday of the month which is guild day. Teresa, Barbara, Kathryn, Siggi and Eileen were all there. Missing was Susan, Billie and Nora. I finally finished the guild Calendar BOM for 2008 by completing November.

I also worked on Jess's wedding quilt and completed 25 more "B" arcs.

Amy's Quilt

Amy got her quilt yesterday so I can finally post pictures. She was so excited! I also sent her some of my knitted booties and mitts.

The quilt is very similar to the purple scrap quilt I made for myself, except I didn't want to make all those flying geese and square in a square blocks so I filled in one block with 4 patches and I really like the way the quilt turned out.

Another Baby Quilt Top

I saw a quilt using scrappy rail fence blocks and thought, this might be good in my bright fabric. It wasn't... too busy. So I changed direction and made another 16 patch quilt similar to the one I made for my granddaughter, Darcy, but smaller. This is probably what I will do with the rest of the leftover fabric... and I have a lot of leftover fabric already sewn into strips.

I've been blogging for almost a year! The time has gone by so fast, I just can't believe it! I wish I had put a visitor counter from the very beginning, but still, to have 2500 visitors since January 4th is really cool! I have encountered so many wonderful bloggers and have had entirely too much fun sharing my quilting with you. Thank you!

What I did today

I have been teaching this beginner class at the quilt shop for months now and my students haven't been able to make more than 2 rows of a rail fence quilt in the 4 hour class. So I revised the way the quilt is made, making the blocks bigger and the quilt about 45" x 60". I think my students will be able to get more done in the time allowed.

I wasn't sure I was going to use any of my stash this week since my husband decided that we needed to take advantage of free green waste week at the county transfer station. We cut down 7 juniper trees and hauled 5 loads in our 16' x 6' trailer to the transfer station. Any other trees will have to wait until the next free green waste week. All these trees were either too close to the house and posed a fire danger, or were crowding pinon trees. But he went to work yesterday and I sewed :)

Sewing and quilting will start slowing down with spring coming. All this week we are taking out Juniper trees that are too close to the house (high fire danger) and since the transfer station (dump) is taking green waste for free we will be making several trips and cleaning up a lot of trees on our 2.6 acres. We only remove the Junipers that crowd the Pinons... that way the Pinon trees have more room to grow.

I'm working on Jessa's wedding quilt, but it is a very slow process. It's a king sized paper pieced Wedding Star Quilt... pattern by Judy Niemeyer. That will have a HUGE yardage stash busting when I get it finished... maybe before their first anniversary? maybe... maybe not!

Fabric for Stash Quilt

That post with nothing on it used to have a raven just like the one in the picture. They have hats most of the time, but at Christmas, they wear Santa hats! I can't believe someone would be so callous as to steal one of them!

I knit my socks on 2 circular needles and use the book "Queen Kahuna's Crazy Toes and Heels Socks" by Mary Ann Beattie. They are knit toe up so they fit very well. The yarn is Wildfoote "Symphony" by the Brown Sheep Company. I just love the color!

February Quiltathon

Not getting much of anything done this weekend, or this week for that matter. Tuesday morning I woke and was unable to keep my balance. It got better during the day, but was back Wednesday morning and then again Thursday. Since this has never happened to me before, I was a bit scared so we made an appointment to see our doctor. It only took him a minute of questions and then me following the light with my eyes for a diagnosis. I have a viral infection in my inner ear and there's not much that can be done about it except take dramamine for the wobbliness. We also stopped in and saw the chiropractor and he adjusted my neck and that has helped a lot, but yesterday I rarely emerged from the recliner in the living room as I had a raging headache most of the day. Today is much better, but the energy level is not where it should be.

I did accomplish one thing... made a pair of socks when my eyes would focus!

Since it is a Quiltathon
weekend, I have also been working on a baby quilt for my "tall daughter" Amy. Amy's dad built our house and she went to high school with our daughter and we love her just like she's our own. Once the quilt is finished and off to Amy, I will post a picture, but not until then. I don't want her to see it since she reads my blog :)

I finished the Curved Log Cabin top and it is in the pile waiting to be quilted. Since it measures 96" x 120", it's too large to get a decent picture of so that will have to wait until it is quilted and I can get people to hold it up for me. One more UFO down!

Since I have been unable to stop buying fabric and haven't used as much as I wanted to, I pulled out a UFO that will require a lot of fabric and it is my goal for this week to finish the top. This is a curved log cabin that I started last year and put away because I got tired of working on it. Besides stashbusting this year, I also want to finish some of my UFO's. Half of the quilt is pieced and put together. I made 10 blocks this morning... have 30 to go. Once it is pieced, I will have used almost 14 yards of fabric... this I know because I drafted the pattern in Electric Quilt and then did the yardage calculation. Even though my log cabin is all scraps, the yardage is still the same.

If I didn't have to go into the quilt shop to teach, I wouldn't even think about buying any fabric. Mike just happened to pull a bolt of PURPLE Fairy Frost, and I just had to buy the rest of the bolt, which was 30% off. I do have a plan for it, though, so it wasn't compulsive buying :) I also bought 1 yard of yellow dotted fabric for my brights stash.

Electric Quilt

For Christmas, I decided I needed some new toys so I bought myself a laptop with a 17" screen and also purchased Electric Quilt software. I'm having a lot of fun with both! Judy over at Patchwork Times uses the software and designs the most wonderful inspiring quilts. I have been using one of her creations "Chicken Dance" to learn how to use the software and after creating a copy of her quilt, I then changed the layout and created my own version of the quilt..."My Chicken Dance".

I think these chickens are doing the do-si-do :)

Here is the story: My husband came into the house one day and said "Bring your camera! You've got to come and see this!" So off I went to see what he was talking about and he had found the biggest horned toad I have ever seen! We put his glove next to it so you can see exactly the size of that baby. That horned toad never moved from his spot. I think he was cold and was trying to warm himself in the sun. My husband is no small person... those are large gloves.

I received some new pictures of my two beautiful granddaughters yesterday and I just had to share this one with you. Brooke, on the right, loves to sit with her feet in the sink and watch her mommy work in the kitchen. Darcy is now big enough to join her sister in the sink!

I knew I was in trouble when I found out the quilt shop where I teach was holding a 30% off sale. Luckily they won't do this very often, but there was fabric that had been calling my name for weeks and I couldn't pass by 30% off!

More Auditioning

As I was wide awake at 6 this morning, I was thinking about this quilt...actually, I woke up several times during the night and also dreamed about this quilt. This is the idea I came up with. This picture just has one of the purples as the middle stripe. It slightly contrasts with the center block.

The purple on the bottom is the same color as the center block and also matches the purple stripe in the border fabric. It can go either way... I like them both!

Auditioning Parts for a New Quilt

I'm having a little trouble deciding what to do with this quilt. I bought the fabric for this Harvest Spice Quilt 3 years ago, but I didn't want to make a huge quilt so I only bought 1/2 yard of many of the fabrics in the collection. I have plenty of the border fabric and I bought 1 1/2 yards of the gold print. What to do? I know... I could leave out that center print square and sash the 4 pieced squares and then I wouldn't have to deal with filling in all those triangle spaces. I do love the way the blocks turned out, though.

Baby Booties

I quilt, I tat... and I knit. I found these cute baby booties in one of my knitting books and I have been making them by the dozens. My daughter has lots of friends who are having babies, there are always babies being added to families at my church, and the rest go to Adoption Assistance Agency in Albuquerque or CareNet in Edgewood, NM. Then I found the mitt pattern online and thought it made a great addition to the booties! Now the babies have warm tootsies and won't scratch their faces :)

I didn't get nearly as much done today as I thought I would. Went to church this morning and by the time I got home around 11, I just wasn't in the mood to do much quilting. I did do the quilting on this quilt that I already had loaded on the Voyager.

This quilt was the "surprise" two years ago at the Jackie Robinson New Mexico retreat. She provided the fabric for the top and the pattern. This was her "Fuschia" line of fabric. All I need to do to finish it is the binding, probably tomorrow.

And 3 fat quarters were used to do the 3 guild BOM blocks.

I'm getting some of my tops finished! This is the 5th time I've made this tabletopper/wallhanging and the second time in this color scheme. I just love this pattern and need to have at least one on hand to give as a gift so I'll probably keep making them. The quilt was first found at:

I revised the pattern with inspiration from one of the Yahoo groups I am a member of and made it octagonal instead of square.

These next two quilts are the same pattern, but with the colors arranged two different ways. This was a Spidron workshop I did in one of my Yahoo groups in August, 2007. This is the definition according to Wikipedia: In geometry, a spidron is a continuous flat geometric figure composed entirely of triangles, where, for every pair of joining triangles, each has a leg of the other as one of its legs, and neither has any point inside the interior of the other. The first quilt is how the pattern was done for the workshop. The second quilt I did because I wanted to see how the colors made up stars within stars.

Pre-Quiltathon Accomplishments

Yesterday I worked on getting things ready for this weekend's Quiltathon. I finished the August BOM yesterday, the September BOM this morning and the December BOM this afternoon. My embroidery machine needs to go into the shop to be cleaned and adjusted so I won't be doing any more embroidery on these blocks.

I only have the November block left to do and then I am done with this project!

3 UFO's finished!

I paper pieced this Santa wallhanging and the blocks sat around for a while, then finally put it together and it sat around for a while, but now it's finished... just in time for next Christmas!

Solar Progress

We have it! The solar cells on the roof are heating the radiant floor and the domestic hot water. This should really reduce our propane usage, which is the whole point of going solar. I don't have a before picture of the mechanical room, but this is what it looks like now.

More tanks, more pipes... I'm calling to get our propane tank topped off and then we'll be able to see how much propane we'll be saving with our new system. The current price is $1.87 a gallon... down from the $2.13 we just paid on November 10th! Good thing... we need about 200 gallons to fill the tank.

One of my bad habits

I don't know why I do this, but when I finish a quilt, I put all the leftover fabric in a baggie instead of dealing with it. I guess I think I may make another quilt just like it????? I don't know. So as part of my stashbusting efforts for 2009 I am working on getting my fabric more organized. So here is a picture of the baggies I found...

And these are the baggies that are left...

These are legitimate UFO's. These baggies contain blocks that I just might use someday. Everything else was either cut down into strips... or 4" squares.

And whatever I just didn't want to mess with went right into the trash.

My thanks to Judy at Patchwork Times for inspiring me to work on my stash and all my UFO's

I am going to try to keep track of whay I buy versus what I use and see if I can deplete my stash in 2009. So far, I have bought more than I have used, but the year is just starting!

The quilt shop where I teach has started a new promotion. Mike is blindfolded and then pulls 13 bolts of fabric. These bolts are then on sale for the week at 30% off. Needless to say, Mike pulled 2 bolts I liked and so I bought some from each. 2 yards of a light fabric and 3 yards of a southwestern turtle fabric.

So my stashbusting for this week...

5 yards purchased
1 2/3 yards (90 wide muslin) used for backing

I think that almost makes me even for the week :)
